From admission to enrollment preparation

3-2 Procedures before coming to Japan

Before you come to Japan, you must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and then a student visa. You can obtain a student visa without obtaining a COE by applying directly to the diplomatic mission in your home country (Japanese embassy or consulate general), but this requires many documents and takes time. Normally, you will apply for a COE with a regional immigration services bureau, and after receiving it apply for a student visa at the Japanese diplomatic mission in your home country.
The school where you will enroll will apply for the COE on your behalf.

Until you obtain a status of residence

Documents necessary when entering Japan

In addition to your passport, student visa and COE, you may be asked to provide proof of enrollment and documents proving your ability to pay expenses.

Residence card and permission to engage in an activity other than those permitted by the status of residence

At both Narita and Haneda airports, your passport will be stamped with a seal of landing permission once your landing is permitted, and you will receive a residence card. If you wish, you can also apply for permission to engage in an activity other than those permitted by the status of residence at the same time.
