4-3 Procedures while enrolled in school, leaves of absence, temporary returns to home country, etc.

Renewal of visa

If your visa will expire not long before your advancement to a professional training college from a Japanese-language school or even while you are enrolled, apply for an extension of your visa by the expiration date. Applications are accepted up to three months prior to the expiration date.

Enrollment in National Health Insurance

If you were under the age of twenty when you entered Japan, you must enroll in National Health Insurance when you turn twenty years old.

Leave of absence

If you need to be absent from school due to unavoidable circumstances for an extended period, you must apply for a leave of absence. If your leave will last three months or more, you will have to temporarily return to your home country. You are not allowed to engage in any activity other than those permitted by your visa status (part-time work) during your leave of absence.

If you will be out of Japan for less than a year…You have to indicate your intention to re-enter Japan on the embarkation and disembarkation card (ED card) for re-entrants that you fill out at the airport (or other port) upon departure.
If you will be out of Japan for a year or more…You must apply for and obtain a re-entry permit from the Immigration Services Agency of Japan before leaving the country.

You cannot renew your visa while you have returned to your home country for a leave of absence. You must re-enter Japan after obtaining a new COE.

Withdrawal

If you have to withdraw from school due to unavoidable circumstances, you must notify the Immigration Services Agency of Japan within fourteen days of the date you withdraw. The school will also notify the Immigration Services Agency of your withdrawal, so if you remain in Japan after that you will be considered to be staying illegally in Japan even if your visa has not expired.

Consult with the school in advance before deciding to take a leave of absence or withdraw
